Bulgaria: Intensified inspections on fruit and veg traders and storage facilities

Since mid-June, inspectors from the Regional Directorate for Food Safety (RDFS) in Gabrovo have intensified their inspections on markets, warehouses and outlets for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Checks are intended to monitor the products' compliance with existing legislation to prevent unfair trade practices and protect consumers from being misled about the origin, quality and safety of fruit and vegetables offered on the Bulgarian market.

Between 16 June and 14 August a total of 235 checks have been carried out in the region, inspecting nearly 350 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables. Controls are performed on weekends.

The most common deficiencies found by inspectors are related to the lack of necessary information on the labels and gaps in documentation.
