Summer citrus consumption still growing

“Seald Sweet was one of the first in the summer citrus deal in the US market. We have been growing these programs in the US since they began, a little over 15 years ago,” says Kim Flores with Seald Sweet International. “Since its inception, consumption of summer citrus has steadily grown. This season, we are shipping about 20 percent more volume compared to last year and the market continues to absorb it,” Flores added.

“An increase in consumption is the result of citrus having a great flavor profile and being such a versatile fruit,” mentions Flores. In summer, it is used for marinades and sauces for grilling. Citrus also works very well in fresh salads, as garnishes and of course it is great for cocktails and frozen beverages.

During the US summer season, Seald Sweet sources its citrus varieties from South Africa, Uruguay, Chile and Peru. “We typically start our summer program with clementines,” says Peter Anderson from Seald Sweet International. They are available from May through October. “In June, we start importing navel oranges and customers should be able to buy these until mid-October. In July, we start shipping Cara Cara oranges, minneola tangelos and lemons. In September and October we have Midknight seedless oranges available. Timing is great for a smooth transition into our domestic citrus program in fall,” adds Anderson.
