Gala especially sweet

Austria apple season commencing

Southern Tyrol is starting with the Gala variety in the new season – at the same time this is the main type of the region. The farmers began the harvest of Gala's early sites mid-last week, www.stol.it reports. That is “mainly in the lowlands and Bozner Raum,” explains Georg Kössler, head of the Verband Südtiroler Obstgenossenschaften VOG. “In the course of this week, other sites will begin with the harvest as well.”

The extreme weather of the past weeks has left its mark. As Kössler explains, it is positive in that the apples are sweeter and have a more intense taste this year. But unfortunately, some apples have suffered sunburn. Furthermore, the apples are smaller in areas that had less rainfall.

“We had a good start to the season, with a high demand”, Kössler explains. “With Gala we are counting on reaching a normal level regarding price.” He says that the price will certainly be satisfactory for the producers. For the coming weeks, Kössler is wishing for “normal late-summer weather”.
