US(CA): Green pepper grower launches on-the-go snack

At the Fresno Food Expo last week, Baloian Farms launched its sweet mini pepper snack. “We are a leader in peppers, especially green peppers,” said Richard Cowden with Baloian Farms. “We’ve been growing mini peppers for about ten years, but the sweet mini pepper snack with ranch dip is a brand new product.”

Trend towards healthy snacks
In the past few years, Baloian Farms noticed an increased interest for single-serving options. “At trade shows, we were asked about a convenient snack product. The developments in the healthy snack category combined with the results from consumer research studies, encouraged us to develop the sweet mini pepper snack. We are able to provide something that not only tastes great, but is also healthy.”

From hospitals to airports
At last week’s show, the responses from buyers were very positive. “We had interest from people that are working in the industries of hospitals as well as schools and convenience stores,” mentioned Cowden. “It will also be a great item for airport and vending machines. We may be a year or two in front of the trend, but it is coming.”

At the moment, Baloian Farms is having conversations with several retailers in California, which could also lead to future distribution outside California. The suggested retail price of a cup of sweet mini peppers is $1.79 and Baloian prefers to keep it under the $2 threshold. “However, the final price depends on different factors, including individual customer markup rates and third party distribution and handling factors.”
