Gerco Mast, Purple Pride:

"Slight revival on eggplant market after difficult season"

The eggplant market is going through a difficult time. The high Spanish supplies already caused a rough start of the season, and the Russian boycott is also heavily affecting eggplant growers. "We are having one of the worst seasons in years. 2012 was a historically bad eggplant season, and in terms of results, it's starting to look like that," says sales manager Gerco Mast of DOOR Partners, which handles sales and marketing of Purple Pride members' eggplants.

"Last year, the warm spring made for a lot of kilos early on. Now, supplies are more spread out, and production-wise we're on track, only sales aren't going smoothly yet. At the moment, it's very noticeable that it's the holiday period, with day trade being especially tame. We mostly rely on the regular weekly programmes. Historically, the summer period from week 26 until 30 is a difficult period, but we got through that reasonably well. However, we don't make up for the bad months we've had with that," Gerco continues.

"The production spike we've had now, and the supply, will decrease a bit each week. Prices were still around 55-60 cents last week, but due to a strong decrease in production, they have now risen to 75-80 cents. Normally, prices will go up further in the coming weeks, toward 1 to 1.20 euros, depending on size. Spain is not on the market just yet, so good weeks may come, but it won't be sufficient to close the gap."

In the long run, the sales manager still has a lot of confidence in eggplant sales. "Eggplant consumption is on the rise in all North-western European countries, so that provides a lot of perspective. We like to think ahead and along with the client. For instance, in conjunction with our clients, we develop new concepts and in-store promotion materials to make people more aware of the eggplant and to boost sales."
