Top fruit harvest estimated 6-7% lower than last year

The Dutch supply of both apples and pears this year is estimated to be 6 to 7 percent smaller than the large harvest last year. The late and cold spring has led to the size of the fruits on the tree to fall behind 2014 in growth. An uncertain factor is the rainfall and temperature throughout the rest of the growing season, which will influence the growth of the fruits and with it the eventual size of the harvest.

The harvest estimation adds up to 330 million kilos of apples and 327 million kilos of pears. Compared to the large 2014 harvest, this is a 7 % smaller apple harvest and the production of pears is estimated to be 6 percent smaller. This is shown in information from the GroentenFruit Huis based on the working group harvest estimate. The area of apples in the Netherlands is going through an annual decrease, whilst the pear area increases. This development is continuing this year. There are over 7,500 hectares of apples and almost 8,800 hectares of pears. The apple and pear growers expect products with a good quality, shelf life and flavour.

The estimate of the main apple variety Elstar is 3 percent lower. There will also be less of the varieties Jonagold (incl. Jonagored) and Golden Delicious, mainly due to a small surface. The supply of Kanzi, the third apple variety in the Netherlands, is increasing slightly every year. The harvest of Conference, worth 80 percent of the Dutch pear harvest, is estimated to be around 262 million kilos. This is 5 percent less than last year, but more than in 2013. There is also a smaller supply of the second variety, Doyenné du Comice.
