Pierre Sweep:

"There could not be a better transition to the new celeriac season"

The new celeriac season has started, "On Monday we will be in the new harvest," says Pierre Sweep from A&P Sweep in Zevenbergen, The Netherlands. "The season went great. We had really good quality tubers from the old crop and demand was really good. Despite the fact that there were 30% more tubers in stock, as seen from February's stock inventory, we have had to slow down sales in recent weeks in order to create a smooth transition to the new harvest. You could not imagine a better overlap to the new season. At the moment the growers price is around 45 cents for the old crop."

In recent years Sweep has invested heavily in cultivation and preservation techniques and therefore is able to offer high quality products later in the season. Much of his produce is harvested with a potato harvester, "In terms of presentation, mechanization and quality we have set the bar high and that has paid off," says Pierre. "Last month, trucks full of our field crop were headed to England. Customers often say that they will switch over to the new harvest, but because the old harvest is so good they keep ordering the old tubers. There have been weeks in which we have sold 700-800 tons of tubers."
