UK: Avocado price shoots up again

After a recent lull in the market, the avocado price has shot up again, according to Robert Cullum of Pacific Produce.

“The demand is back on again, and the recent prices of green skins have been higher than normal. The prices of the Hass avocados have jumped up very quickly as well.”

The avocado prices do usually increase later on in the season as the product becomes more scarce, but the rise is earlier than usual this year, he explains: “This price increase is around 4 or 5 weeks earlier than usual.

“So far this year there has been a rise in volume for export with 18.4 million cartons in total from Peru by week 26, compared to 17.6 million at the same time last year. However, it is important to note that most of this increase was sent earlier on in the season, and in fact over the last few weeks the export volume has been lower than in the previous year.”

Pacific Produce exports from Peru, which faces direct competition from South Africa.

“Peruvian exports are increasing much faster than those in South Africa,” says Robert. “South Africa has limited exporters so the control of shipments and prices is quite tightly managed. Peru has many more exporters, but some of them are becoming quite large indeed.”
