Mexico: Michoacan 's most important export product is avocado

In 2014 avocado exports amounted to 709,514.036 tons, positioning it as the state's most important exports by volume. In the first half of 2015, avocado exports to international markets totalled 388,588 tons, according to information from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA).

According to this data, 83 percent of the 854,270 tons exported by Michoacan between 2014 and 2015 correspond to avocado, 590,342.661 tons of which, (83% of the total) was sent to the United States, followed by Japan with 45,270.841 tons (7%); Canada with 34,861.196 tons (5%), and Central America, France and China, with an average of 7,000 tons per year, about 1 percent each.

Mango exports ranked second by volume, with 70,396 tons in 2014, i.e. 8 percent of the state's exports, followed by lemon with 24,182 tons (3%), and blackberry with 15,190 tons in 2014, (2%).

The ranking of Michoacan's leading export food products didn't change by the end of the first half of 2015. However, melon exports increased and surpassed blackberry exports, even though the latter benefited from the opening of the Chinese market.

Avocados retained their leadership with 388,588 tons, mango ranked second with 28,287 tons, and was followed by lemon with 16,253 tons, melon with 15,167 tons, and blackberry with 10,773 tons.

Mexico's avocado exports grew by 29.1% in May 2015 when compared to the previous month, preceded by cattle exports, which rose 70 percent over the previous month; melon, papaya and watermelon exports, which increased by 45.8 percent; mango, 33.5 percent, and onions and garlic, 30.6 percent, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Agrifood and seafood exports amounted to $1,202 million dollars in May 2015, i.e. 4.9 percent more than in the same month of 2014.
