Not the best cherry year ever

Germany: 50700 metric tons of cherries expected

According to the Bureau of Statistics the fruit growers expect a cherry harvest of 50700 metric tons, which is just below the average of the past decade. According to the first estimates a harvest of 33100 metric tons of sweet cherries and sour cherries 17600 metric tons can be expected in Germany.

An initial overview the Bureau of Statistics estimated the yield per unit area for sweet cherries is 7100 kg per hectare. The estimated is based on the fruit development in late May / early June. This year the sweet cherry yield is estimated at 14700 metric tons on an acreage of 2,075 ha. This is about one tenth below the long-term average of 2009/2014 (16255 metric ton)

Last year the cherry harvest in Germany amounted to 20140 metric tons. Hailstorms and frost in April in the main growing regions, Central and South Baden, are the main reasons for the lower yield.

In normal weather conditions sour cherries are expected to reach 7600 kg per hectare, slightly below average and compared to previous years a decrease of 5 percent.
Sour cherries are mostly used in processed foods for instance marmalade and juice.
Given the acreage of 200 hectares, this year's sour cherry harvest is estimated at 1565 metric tons. This is almost 8 percent below the long-term average 2009/2014.

The yield of plums and prunes is estimated at nearly 11000 kg. This means that with the acreage of 1500 ha a yield of 16500 metric tons, less than the long-term average of, 2009/2014, 19415 metric ton.
