More consumers are worried about buying products that are good for them and good for the environment. That has led to more sales of organic products and of products with packaging that is recyclable. As a manufacturer of clamshells for berry growers, Sambrailo Packaging is making packaging to fit with those trends.
“The organic market is growing by leaps and bounds,” noted Tony Cadiente of Sambrailo. “About 15 or 20 years ago, the organic section in many supermarkets was very small. Now there are big displays for organics that take up large portions of space. People are more aware of what's in their fruit, so we're working to stay abreast of that.” One of the packaging solutions they've developed for organic growers is the Go Greener! clamshell that's made from clear and green recycled plastic. The green tint is a good way to draw attention to the organic product.
There's a big emphasis on recycled packaging, but as consumers pay more attention to how packaging affects the environment, Cadiente said they're working to eliminate even more waste.
“We're looking at not just recycled packaging, but we're also looking into compostable packaging,” said Cadiente. “We're looking at a fiber-type basket with a lid that's made from sugarcane fibers and other fibers that will dissolve when you put them into the ground.” Sambrailo offers a full range of packaging and labeling services when it comes to clamshells for berries – from designing and testing the clamshell to designing and printing labels – and that level of customization has helped them adapt to green and organic trends.
“We're always looking for better ways of doing things,” said Cadiente. “So we're constantly working with growers and shippers to better use packaging materials to make sure they're recyclable.”
