Italy in trouble

Good quality cherries for Spain, France and Turkey

The worldwide company of KÖLLA GmbH & Co. KG is expecting fresh cherries from European cultivation next week. While the cherries from Italian production are currently facing problems; Spain, France and Turkey are expecting a good-to very good harvest.

Italy struggles with weather

Due to severe weather in Southern Italy, the start of the cherry season is taking place under compounded conditions. Compared to 2014, the start needs to be delayed by roughly seven days. Five days of constant rain in the 22nd calendar week have caused problems in Northern Italy. It remains to be seen how the season will develop. The weather of the coming two weeks will decide whether it will be the best or worst season of 2015. The new early variety “Sweet Early” is still appealing due to an excellent flavour and relatively firm flesh.

New packaging idea at PoS
In Spain on the other hand, the high temperatures of this season are leading to a good colouring and quantity of cherries. The harvest of the varieties Burlat and Early Bigi has been finished to the greatest possible extent. They are working with small calibres, which is due to the cherries’ short growing phase this season. For the presentation at the Point of Sale, KÖLLA has developed a new, innovative packaging idea, which they would really like to show to interested customers.

Optimal conditions with reduced yield

In France, the cherries have an optimal ripening process this year. This is due to the dry and warm weather conditions in the south-west of France this year. Despite the optimal conditions, KÖLLA’s experts are counting on a smaller harvest than last year. The marketing of the softer varieties is effectively concluded, seamlessly transitioning into the firm varieties.

Turkey with optimal quality and quantity

The KÖLLA experts are expecting excellent quality and quantity from the Turkish cherries. 40 percent of the total volume, which KÖLLA imports from Turkey under the brand name “Alinda”, are from the areas of Manisa and Izmir. Last year, this corresponded with a quantity of 1,500 tons of sweet cherries. Since June 8, more cherries of good and rich quality are available from the Saripinar region.
