Italy: Lack of raspberries keeps prices high

The Diego Gadler company is located near Trento and grows soft fruit on 5 hectares of polytunnels. Its main productions are remontant raspberries, of which it harvests 17 tons every year of the Enrosadira variety (see photo below) on 1.5 hectares, floricane raspberries (16 tons/year of the Tulameen variety on 1.5 hectares) and blueberries (13 tons/year on 1.3 hectares). These are followed by blackberries (6 tons a year) and redcurrant (1 ton a year).

In addition to the owner, there are three other members of the family who work for the company as well as 15 seasonal employees. The main destinations are the markets in the main Northern cities and a few wholesalers.

"Until 2014, we cultivated over 2 hectares of floricane raspberries as well as Heritage remontant ones. Then I planted the first 2,000 plants of Enrosadira and, considering its good results, I decided to increase its production by reducing the quantity of floricane raspberries and replacing the Heritage variety."

Enrosadira® is the new red raspberry variety by Vivai Molari. It is very early and produces excellent quality fruit.

"We transplanted the Enrosadira variety on May 12th 2014 and we will start harvesting on August 5th. Plants produce 1,265 grams of premium produce each. Greenhouse harvesting started on May 18th. In 2016, I will destine 90% of raspberry production to the Enrosadira variety."

"The quality of the fruit is excellent, just like its shelf-life. So much so that my buyers are willing to pay up to €2 more per kg. With the suitable cultivation techniques, this variety enables us to cover the entire season."

"There is not a lot of produce at the moment. Demand is quite interesting because there is no fruit incoming from Spain. Consumption is not that lively because supply is medium-low, but enough to keep prices high."

In addition to the varieties mentioned above, Gadler is collaborating with Vivai Molar to experiment on new selections. For example, this year it is testing the new Castion remontant variety.
