Don Limon

Success for sweet potatoes from Honduras

“After a year of studying markets and growers, highlighting good grower practices and commercial opportunities, our team of Don Limon developed a new crop for the Don Limon brand: Sweet Potatoes from Honduras,” says Mauro Garcia, one of the Latin America focused people at Pilz Schindler from Hamburg, Germany.

“This crop consist in part of own production and of produce from local growers who stand out, providing an excellent and blemishless crop. Sweet potato is not an uncommon crop in Honduras, but much of it is processed as sweet potato chips for the American market. The requirements of sweet potatoes for chips are less stringent in terms of quality, compared to a crop that has to be suitable for fresh consumption. The team of Honduran growers who now grow for exports to Europe in the Don Limon brand have been hand selected, based on their know-how. They know how to produce a standard that meets the demands for fresh consumption,” Garcia portrays.

Given that the Don Limon brand is headquartered in Europe, there is much potential to service and distribute good quality sweet potato for fresh consumption. The first arrivals of Honduran sweet potatoes in the Don Limon boxes were quickly absorbed by customers in France, Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Spain at a pace of a container per week. The exports are focused entirely on Europe, as the USA is quite careful with its domestic production of sweet potatoes.
