Mexico: Mango production Sinaloa could fall

This year's production of mango for export in Sinaloa could decline between 20 and 25% because of problems attributed to climate change.

The growers and the representative authorities in this sector, such as SAGARPA, the State Committee of Plant Health, Sinaloa's Plant Health Directorate, and Local Plant Health Boards, initiated preparations for the harvest of this succulent fruit, which will start in mid June with the Ataulfo variety.

Exports
Sinaloa normally exports about 40,000 tons of mango per year, but estimates are that, this season, they will only export about 30,000 tons as a result of the problems faced by climate change, specifically the strong winds experienced in mid-April that caused a collapse of an important part of the mango production and other seasonal crops.

Mango production of export quality mainly takes place in the northern municipalities of the state, which are free from fruit fly.

Yesterday, representatives of SAGARPA, Cesavesin, and the Plant Health Directorate met with the producers of the fruit in order to talk about the harvest and review the progress of the major campaigns for the sector, such as the campaign against the fruit fly and the safety and health programs that are permanently developed, which are necessary to maintain a good status in international markets.

Mango packaging
14 mango-packing infrastructures distributed throughout the main areas of the state will participate in the process of cutting, sorting and packing the mango production. At this time of the year, these packing facilities generate an important benefit among people in rural communities as they create employment at a time in which other productive activities, such as the production of vegetables and fish, are on a break.

The Haden, Kent, and Keeit mango varieties, which traditionally have a good acceptance in international markets thanks to their quality and taste, will be collected after the Ataulfo variety.

The mango production will be mainly destined to the United States, but the fruit will also be exported to several European countries, among others.
