Current prices high
Currently prices for okra are high, as is usual for the beginning of the season. A decrease in price is expected after the season’s peak. “We generally experience a small increase at the end of the season when some of the other farms have stopped producing,” adds Quarterman.
Specialty okra growing in demand
While overall demand for okra has not increased, demand for specialty okra such as the purple and red variety have increased throughout the food service industry in high-end restaurants.
Local okra packs better taste
Although Florida is already producing a high amount of okra, the specialty vegetable is best when bought young, tender, and locally. “We sell all of our Okra locally since it’s best eaten fresh and not shipped a long distance,” states Quarterman, “knowing your farmer is the best way to know that you are getting a quality product.”
Weather always posses a threat
The biggest threat for Okra growers is the weather, including extreme temperatures and amount of rainfall. “A hailstorm or a straight line wind can demolish crop in a matter of minutes,” adds Quarterman.
