Controlled atmosphere container extends produce shelf life

“We have developed a container, the Janny MT Module, that extends produce shelf life by using a unique and innovative process of controlled atmosphere,” says Vincent Nicoletis with Janny MT. “Due to the natural respiration of the produce in combination with the lid’s patented membranes, the modules are capable to reach levels of three percent for both O2 and CO2.”

Reducing CO2 levels
In order to reduce O2 flow while releasing CO2, the company’s founder, Mr. Pierre Janny, created an airtight cover where he added semi-permeable membranes. “The membranes allow for a small quantity of O2 in the container while getting rid of excess CO2,” said Nicoletis. This makes the module suitable for the storage of many fruits that are sensitive to CO2, such as pears, apples and plums. “The gas content can be monitored with a gas analyzer, measuring O2 and CO2 levels. This way, the gas levels are guaranteed to stay within the optimal range,” added Nicoletis.

The Janny MT containers offer flexible controlled atmosphere from 1 ton to 100 tons of produce in individual units. “This allows growers to sell just a part of their produce and keep the remainder in the container,” mentioned Nicoletis.

Advantages of the Janny MT module are:
- Partial conversion of a cold room into a controlled atmosphere room
- No need for gas injection or scrubbing
- Easy-to-use and stackable
- Protecting the freshness of the produce
- Marketing of produce over longer periods
- Reducing weight or quality loss
- Better managing sales and distribution

Shelf life improvement
"Janny MT modules have proven to extend shelf life," says Nicoletis. The table below gives an overview of the difference between shelf life in cold storage versus the Janny MT module:
