Future of vegetables central at European Vegetable Strategies

The European Vegetables Strategies took place in Brussels on 7th May. This was the second edition of this special vegetable congress. There were various speakers on the day and naturally the theme 'vegetable consumption' was a popular topic, but there were mixed feelings about the future. "It is difficult to predict the future but fruit and vegetable suppliers must adjust their strategy to the changing consumer behaviour," stressed Cor Molenaar, professor at Erasmus University, during his presentation. He is known for his book on changing consumer behaviour.

New food concepts
The previous day the delegates had the opportunity to see two new concepts, the Grand Frais and Rseau O'tera in France. Hans Verwege marketing analyst from Enza Zaden, said these were very new concepts where fresh was the foundation.

Consumption and export
VLAM and the GroentenFruit Huis (Belgiun and Dutch associations) brought interesting facts about the Dutch and Belgian fruit and vegetable trade, consumption and promotion. Wilco van den Berg from GroentenFruit Huis explained that The Netherlands certainly missed Russia as a destination, they were in the top there for Dutch export countries. "But we must look forward and we have already seen success in markets such as China, Brazil and Indonesia. Anneleen Leon said that the Belgians ate an average of 42 kg of vegetables per year, but that must increase to 109.5 per year. Campaigning does work though and with the 'All Day Long' campaign the consumption of fruit and veg increased by 10%.
