Yellow romano peppers with lots of potential
Good growing conditions and good quality
"Demand for the romana pepper grown in Burgenland is very high,“ explains managing director Josef Peck. Seewinklers’ romano peppers are currently available at the Austrian supermarkets REWE, Merkur, Billa and Penny. Other chains already showed interest. Around one million units will be harvested throughout the season. "The growing conditions for peppers are good this year and we offer an excellent quality," says Peck, "but the product itself if more labour intensive. The cultivation and care of the plant requires more attention than a conventional bell pepper."
Customers appreciate locally grown food
The main competitors in the cultivation of romano peppers come from the Netherlands and Spain. "Of course we notice the competition," says Peck, "But with our peppers, as it is with many other Austrian vegetables, our customers value our products, and they prefer locally grown produce" For the first year the farmers’ association does not have plans for export. "And whether we are going to increase the volume we grow next year, has to be decided together with our clients. We will just watch and analyse this year and then decide whether we expand next year," explains Josef Peck.
Peppers as the main product
The main product grown by Seewinkler Sonnengemüse is peppers (capsicum). Every year the distribution company moves an average of 26 million pieces of the colourful members of the nightshade family. Since the year 2000 Seewinkler Sonnengemüse has specialized in the marketing of the produce grown by approximately 50 vegetable farmers from Seewinkel.
