Gert-Jan Slobbe, Fortuna Frutos: cucumber season historically bad

"Slightly lower production of Canary tomatoes with just higher prices"

Fortuna Frutos expects to continue to offer Canary tomatoes for another few weeks. "So far we have had a reasonable season with slightly lower productions and just higher prices," says Gert-Jan Slobbe. "As far as quality is concerned the Canary tomato season is going fine. I expect it to continue for around another three to four weeks and as the market situation for round tomatoes develops it could shorten or lengthen the season."

The price level of the Canary tomatoes is in line with the Dutch product, around 4.50 to 5 Euro. "For years we have been working to extend the season with a high quality Canary tomatoes and for this we have built up wide sales towards food service, catering and retail in the Netherlands, but also in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe," continues Slobbe.

Recently it turned out that the Canary tomato sector has lot 672 growers and 52,000 tonnes of export in five years. "Like all over the sector a lot of players are dropping out, but our group has managed to stabilise our share and even extend it. We are growing against the current and combined with the Spanish and Dutch supply are able to offer a constant supply of tomatoes all year round. We therefore look towards the future with confidence."

The season of the Canary cucumbers went far less well last season. "The last year may have been the worst season in history. We had a quite mild autumn, in which the supply of the various origins coincided and the sales of the Canary cucumbers barely made it out of the depression," concludes Gert-jan.
