Cherries for $47 at Shanghai retailer
I visited Ole', a luxury retailer that has a supermarket at the Shops at Kerry Parkside in Shanghai's Pudong district. The retailer focuses on top of the market products and has many brands available. They even sell exclusive wines and single malt whiskeys that cost over 5,000 USD per bottle.
In the fresh produce section, every single item is packed in cellophane wrap, bags or in clamshells. There is not a single veggie of fruit that is on sale as a loose item.
Chiquita has many premium tomatoes and leafy greens available that are grown nearby Shanghai by local growers and farmers. As well as this, some independent local farmers offer their own brands of mostly organic produce.
The quality of all the products offered was very high and a group of 4 supermarket staff were constantly keeping an eye on the section of fresh produce keeping it nice and tidy.
One remarkable thing I witnessed was in the stonefruit section; Chinese consumers are willing to pay 30 to 50 USD dollars for packs of cherries and golden cherries.
But what surprised us the most were the flowers, bouquets of roses for 75 USD!
