"Sweet pointed peppers from Kwekerij Het Westland are popular"

When Thimo van Marrewijk began cultivation in Wateringen in 2012, the 2.7 ha greenhouse still had both pointed and bell peppers. Three years later, the entire greenhouse is full of sweet pointed peppers from Westland Seeds. Thimo: 'Demand for sweet pointed peppers is good at the moment, fortunately, making an expansion possible.'

Despite Thimo (Kwekerij Het Westland) only having planted in week 4, he'll be filling up the first pallets already this week. Thimo isn't surprised about the speed: 'The red WLS 1440, yellow WLS 1443 and orange WLS 2091 are early and in production very quickly, and they'll easily hold out until the end of the season. Top performers for my greenhouse.'

In terms of flavour, the red WLS 1440 even surpasses the Ramiro, as it does when it comes to annual numbers. Thimo: 'There are some tests from other seed companies, but so far no better variety has been found than the WLS 1440. In addition, the yellow WLS 1443 and orange WLS 2091 perfectly match the WLS 1440 in terms of size and weight. It's a family that fits the demands of the supermarket: not too heavy and all the same length.'

The pointed peppers are sold through Gilad to various supermarkets in Europe, and packaged by Rainbow Kleinpak in a pointed bag in various colours. That's also one of the strengths of Kwekerij Het Westland. 'Supermarkets want pointed peppers in multiple colours these days, and that's what we offer. For the coming winter, we are also looking at the possibility of winter cultivation, in order to supply the same quality and colour variety to supermarkets year-round,' Thimo says.
