Poland: Onions 70% cheaper than last year at Bronisze
According to MaĆgorzaty Skoczewskiej, of the Warsaw Agricultural and Food Wholesale Market Bronisze, domestic cucumbers, grown in Polish greenhouses, have currently completely replaced imported ones. The year also promises to be interesting for raspberry tomato growers.
Regular tomatoes in Bronisze are sold at a price of 5 to 8 zloty* per kilo (pack of 6 kg), while raspberry tomatoes, considered a delicatessen, are slightly more expensive and cost between 7.5 to 9 zloty per kilo, with prices depending on the size and quality of the fruit.
Cucumbers are sold in packs of 5 kg for between 17.5 and 20 zloty per pack, which is 0.25 to 0.50 zloty per kilo less than last year (-10%). Cold weather, however, has had an impact on the price of butterhead lettuce, which is quite expensive for this time of the year, reaching between 35 and 40 zloty per 12 pieces.
This year's greenhouse vegetable production from the Netherlands has also started hitting the shelves. So far, peppers, courgettes, aubergines and broccoli had been imported from Spain. Importers assure that the Dutch vegetables are tastier, although they are also more expensive than the Spanish.
When it comes to domestic vegetables, carrot prices range between 2.20 and 2.50 zloty per kilo, which is 2.5 times more expensive than last season. Cabbage is also a lot more expensive than a year earlier, with prices ranging between 1.20 and 1.50 zloty per kilo (+60%).
Also, despite the fact that onion and apple prices have been rising for the past few days, these products are cheaper than a year ago. Onions are sold at a price of 0.65 to 1 zloty per kilo, which is 70% less than in 2014. Meanwhile, domestic apples are around 25% cheaper than last year, with prices ranging between 1.5 and 1.66 zloty per kilo for most varieties, and 2.33 zloty/kg for the Gala, Cortland and Alwa.
