US: Eggplant imports wind down

As imports of eggplant from Mexico wind down, supplies from there have been heavy. As the West transitions from imported product, supplies from Coachella are expected to arrive on the market in the coming weeks.

On April 17, supplies of eggplant from Mexico were reported as heavy at the Nogales, Arizona crossing. At that crossing, prices for a carton of wrapped 18s were between $14.95 and $16.95, and a carton of wrapped 24s was between $12.00 and $14.95 in price. Demand was good for 18s and moderate for 24s. Imports of Mexican product could continue to arrive for about three more weeks, and the Coachella season should commence shortly before that.

Out of Florida, demand was good and the market remained steady at the end of last week. There was a wide range in pricing, with prices for a carton of wrapped medium eggplant between $12.35 and $16.95 at last week's end.
