The company Primaflor has expanded the production line of one of its processing facilities, so that from now on it will be able to process 2.5 tonnes of iceberg lettuce per hour. This line will also produce ready-to-eat salads and the company has announced a new range of products that will allow you to add pasta and ham, egg or tuna to its salads.
This was announced by the company on Monday during the visit of the Spanish Minister of Employment and Social Security, Fátima Báñez, who described the firm as a leading example within the sector, highlighting its courage and "capacity to create jobs and invest in the future of the province."
With this project, the organisation, which in August last year expanded its cold storage facilities by 2,000 square metres, seeks to "take one more step in the ready-to-eat salads segment," and by April it expects to present the range of products that will be marketed under the brand Babyfresh.
Primaflor has highlighted its commitment to "promoting a healthy lifestyle" by marketing ready-to-eat salads; a business that "has not stopped growing" since the launch of the first pilot plant in 2002. "That year, 600,000 kilos of salad were sold, a figure that increased to one million kilos by the following year," they pointed out.
The current salad factory, located in Pulpí, Almeria, and built in 2005, has a total of 11 lines and it also cools and stores the product for other factories, both for the domestic and the international market.
In this sense, the annual turnover from ready-to-eat salads last season "accounted for about 30% of the company's total," according to sources from the firm, which offered no more details regarding turnover and profits. In any case, they state that this "results in a production of over 12 million kilos annually." Compared to the previous season, production has increased by around 10%.
Primaflor is an agro-food company specialised in the production, marketing and distribution of leafy vegetables, mainly lettuce varieties, and other items such as ready-to-eat salads, peeled garlic or sauces. This firm has 6,000 hectares of crops and 2,000 employees, who handle more than 150 million pieces of lettuce annually.
The firm owns the Babyfresh brand, under which salad complements, as well as other processed products, such as different sauces, gazpacho, salmorejo and grated tomato, among others, are marketed.
