Over the past five years, exports of physalis or aguaymanto, as it is called in Peru, grew from U.S. $160,000 in 2010 to $1.6 million in 2014, i.e. a 1,000% increase, stated Sierra Exportadora.
Currently, they added, more than 50% of the exports of this Peruvian fruit are sent to the markets of the United States and Germany.
In this context, and to continue promoting exports to the international market, Sierra Exportadora said it has been providing training in the process of industrialization of dried physalis to the producers of the highlands, via their National Peru Berries Programme.
Due to the increasing demand for dried fruits in the world market, Sierra Exportadora is advising small businesses about the techniques and processes to dehydrate physalis.
This institution also held a seminar in Tacna called "Aguaymanto, a fresh and dehydrated business opportunity". This seminar brought together producers, entrepreneurs and investors linked to the export of this fruit.
The cultivation of this fruit was promoted in this seminar by providing technical and commercial information.
Similarly, production and management skills were strengthened in order to establish a sustainable supply chain that boosts the physalis business, focused on generating value added.
