For the past few weeks, tomatoes and cucumbers grown at the state-of-the-art greenhouse complex of Bogatynia, designed and constructed by Dutch specialists and operated by Citronex, have become available to customers of supermarket chains across Poland.
The location of the complex, nearby the Turow power station, is not accidental. “Turow is a Polish-state company supplying electric power, heat and carbon dioxide to our greenhouses, which are necessary for the plants’ growth and ripening. As a result, we can guarantee our clients supplies of fresh, Polish tomatoes throughout the year,” affirms General Manager Marek Szulc.
Its construction started in 2013, very close to the Polish-German border, and currently has an acreage totalling 10.2 hectares. Marek explains that “This area is covered by artificial lights, the very first of their kind in this part of Europe; because of that, we are able to produce the best Polish tomatoes even during winter time.”
“For now, we have 6 hectares of tomatoes and 4 hectares of cucumbers, complementing our production in Siechnice (near Wroclaw city 150KM from Polish-German border), where we have another 30 hectares of tomatoes. We are also currently building new greenhouses in Siechnice, totalling 16 hectares; a project expected to be completed in December 2015. The company’s goal is to reach 100 hectares in the long term,” he continues.
Ultimately, Citronex’s objective is to produce the highest quality tomatoes with the best taste. “For winter production, we are planting only one tomato varieties: the raspberry (Malinowy), distributed by the newly established company Polskie Pomidory. These are considered the best tomatoes available because of their superior flavour and aroma. Furthermore, in Poland raspberry tomatoes are popularly considered as a healthy product,” assures Marek.
This unbeatable quality is not only the result of the use of high-end technology, but also of the application of biological protection and traditional pollination techniques by means of bumblebees.
Furthermore, “The excellent location by the Polish-Czech-German border gives us plenty of possibilities, allowing for short delivery times and consequently lower logistics costs, making our tomatoes and cucumbers very competitive, especially during the winter,” affirms Marek. “These short delivery times ensure that the tomatoes, delivered to our clients in 2.5 kg and 5 kg boxes, have a long shelf life, as well as longer-lasting taste and aroma.”
Citronex is also looking forward to opening their new market in the future in Germany, Czech Republic and Lithuania.
