Eider F1 is a crop with a good growth strength; the plant is very vigorous and fast. The crop grows very fast, yet it is very suitable for a long intensive cultivation cycle. According to Yuksel Tohum it is even suitable for year round cultivation with hydroponics. The fruits of Eider show a very uniform deep red colour.
After selecting the variety last summer, the variety is now grown on 10 hectares by Turkish growers. "They are exporting the variety as a premium tomato for the Russian market", Yildiz said. "Eider was very well received by growers and retailers, due to it's good growing habits and very sweet taste."
Yuksel is now running trials at growers in Ontario, Canada and with growers in the U.S. "We think that the crop has a lot of potential for this market, retailers favour the extreme consistency of the fruit, the high quality and good taste (brix 8). As well as this the shelf life is also good; the variety is not sensitive to cracking and it has good presentation on the supermarket shelves, the fruits are firm, uniform and deep red".
Average fruit weight is 40-45 grams.
Eider F1 has got built in high resistance (HR) for Tomato Mosaic Virus (ToMV), Wilting Disease (Verticillium Dahliae (Vd)) and Intermediate Resistance (IR) to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV).
