25% of European tomatoes grown in Spain

Spain cultivates 25% of the tomatoes produced in Europe, making the country the second largest producer in the European Union (EU), behind Italy, according to data released by the EU statistics office, Eurostat.

Tomato production in the EU in 2013 reached 14.9 million tonnes, of which 5.2 million were produced by Italy (35%), 3.8 million by Spain (25%) and 1.2 million tonnes by Portugal (8%).

Spain is also the second largest onion producer in the EU (1.2 million tonnes in 2013, 21% of the total), surpassed only by the Netherlands (1.3 million tonnes; 23%).

A total of 5.7 million tonnes of onions were produced in the EU in 2013, according to Eurostat.
