US: California single carrot producing state

“This time of the year, California is in the unique position of being the only carrot producing state in the US”, says Andrew Bianchi from Kern Ridge Growers. “The weather has been cooperative and as a result, carrot supplies are very good. There is just enough supply to meet demand.” California’s main carrot growing regions are Kern County and Imperial Valley with production reaching its peak between March and July.

“Being the single carrot producer results in good demand. From now until July, I expect demand to be good. In summer, we are in competition with other carrot producing states, including Washington, Oregon, Michigan, Georgia and Eastern Canada”, Bianchi said. “That time of the year, we cut back our acreage to prevent over supplies.”

Kern Ridge Growers sells carrots to food retailers, food service and wholesalers across the United States and Canada. Carrots are sold in conventional packages, but Kern Ridge also offers cut and peeled carrots. “Consumption of carrots continues to grow, in particular among children”, Bianchi said. “This is the result of schools actively promoting the consumption of healthier snacks.”
