Greece: Good Ortanique and Clementine mandarin season
About 50% of the Ortanique mandarin harvest has been completed in Greece, with increased export rates and satisfactory producer prices. The area of Lakonia Skala is the largest producer of this variety, with a noteworthy increase in the acreage in recent years and production volumes expected to continue growing.
Meanwhile, the harvest of Clementine mandarins finished in January, with average prices of around 0.30 Euro per kilo in Arta, Argolis and Corinthia, while slightly lower levels in Thesprotia. For their part, producers from the Peloponnese and Crete suffered issues due to increased rainfall and frost in early January.
Regarding the situation of mandarin shipments overseas, Mr George Polihronakis, Special Adviser of the Association of Greek exporting companies and Handlers of Fruit, Vegetable and Juice, Incofruit - Hellas, offered a statement to Agrotypos saying that "despite production losses in the Peloponnese due to bad weather, exports so far have been good, with only some issues due to the large volumes of mandarins that need to be shipped."
