Dirk Heerman, Guido Fruit:

"Valentine's Day creating great demand for strawberries"

Although supplies of Spanish strawberries are always low at this time of year, it's even less than other years now, because Spain had another cold wave last week. "Supplies are very low at the moment," says Dirk Heerman of Guido Fruit.

Great demand
"At the moment, there's even less than last week. The volumes are small, but demand is great, mainly because of Valentine's Day, with more people wanting to eat strawberries. The prices are high as well. They've really gone up this week, compared to last week."

He doesn't expect a lot of supply yet in the coming weeks. "I think a bit more will come in again starting next week, but not the large volumes. The bigger shipments will only come in late this month/early next month. So the high price will be here to stay for a while." Guido Fruit is an importer operating from Brussels, and offers a wide range of fruit and vegetables.
