Steady UK retail veggie prices with change of origin

The UK retail prices of the cucumber, cherry tomatoes and mixed peppers are steady, but the retailers often change the veggies country of origin. These prices are monitored by ProduceView at nine supermarkets in the UK, namely: Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Morrisons, M & S, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, and Co-op. The prices are monitored over the last 15 weeks.

Cucumbers

This week, the cucumber prices are between £0.45 (Aldi) and £0.80 (Co-op) cents per unit and the average price is £0.53 per unit. In general, the prices decreased slightly over the last 15 weeks. During the measurement period, the retailers supplied cucumbers from the Netherlands, UK and Spain. From week 48 till now, only Spanish cucumbers were available at the British retailers.

Cherry tomatoes

The cherry tomatoes retail prices remained fairly stable at the retailers over the last 15 weeks. During this period, the cherry tomatoes originate from Morocco, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. This week, however, the tomatoes are only supplied from Morocco and Spain. The majority of the retailers sell tomatoes from different countries throughout the measurement period. Sainsbury, Aldi and Lidl, however, supply cherry tomatoes from one single country; Sainsbury only from Morocco and Aldi and Lidl only from Spain. From week 50 till now, there was no availability of British cherry tomatoes at the retailers.

Peppers

This week, the retail price of a mixed pepper package is between £0.96 (Lidl) and £1.74 (Co-op). The average price of mixed peppers is £1.12 per package. In general, retailers interchange mixed pepper packages from different countries. The mixed peppers originate from the Netherlands, UK, Morocco, Israel and Spain. The majority comes from Israel and Spain. This week, for example, three retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury, and Morrisons) supply mixed peppers that originates from Israel and the remaining retailers supply mixed peppers from Spain.
