Organic up in Sweden

ICA and Coop Sverige have announced that organic sales increased by 55% and 40% respectively in 2014, with organic now representing 7.7% of total sales at Coop Sverige.

Different products driving the trend for both retailers

Coop Sverige, which sells a range of 2,400 organic products, revealed that the most popular categories for organic products were baby food, eggs, oil/vinegar, fruit and baking.

Commenting on the trend, Anders Svensson, ICA Sverige CEO advised ‘Demand for organic products is growing steadily and for us it is important to continue to develop the range to help customers make sustainable choices. Last year we broadened our ecological range with several new areas such as fruit and vegetables. In 2015, we begin with the launch of a variety of ecological innovations in dairy’.
Stockholm has highest share of organic sales at Coop Sverige

Smaller stores in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, were amongst those with the highest share of organic sales. A store in Järna, a municipality in Stockholm County, had the highest share of organic sales, at 34.4%. Other stores with a high share of organic sales were in Gothenburg and Uppsala, Sweden’s second and fourth largest cities respectively.
