Italy: Taiwan rejects European kiwis

Because of disagreements on the interpretation of the phytosanitary protocol regulating kiwi exports to Taiwan, local authorities are rejecting many containers from France and Italy.

The main problem concerns the location of temperature probes inside said containers. These were rejected on the basis of being just a few centimetres' out of place.

Simona Rubbi, Planning and Legislation manager for the Cso-Centro servizi ortofrutticoli di Ferrara, said they were "really surprised by the sudden stiffening of Taiwan authorities, who notified us about their complaints back in September. Unfortunately, the documents did not follow the right procedure, so our exporter companies only came to know about the required changes quite late. We did comply as soon as we were aware of them, and in fact there were no complaints about the produce coming from our area. Most problems came from the produce from Piedmont."

The regulations concerning the position of temperature probes inside containers must be strictly complied with. Carrier companies, whose technicians are responsible for placing the probes, provided some more information on the matter. It seems that, in addition to being positioned in a precise part of the trailer, the probes must create a isosceles triangle.

In the meantime, the rejected loads have been sent to Hong Kong, as it has no particular phytosanitary requirements, although, as a result, the market was quite congested until Christmas.
