Strong increase in European demand of rambutan

The Honduran company Frutas Exóticas is devoted to the export of rambutan. It has two packing plants, one in the Atlantic coast and another in the country's central area, and three plantations currently certified by GlobalGAP.

The company ships 90% of its production to the U.S. market, 8% to Europe and 2% to Canada. Jack Cole points out: "Due to it being an ethnic crop, the vast majority of our customers are of Asian origin who have migrated to the various markets to which we export."

Frutas Exóticas started marketing in 2010; in 2013, exports reached 340,000 kilos.

"Currently we have 60 hectares certified by GlobalGAP. This year we have exported over 400,000 kilos and we are registering a significant growth for rambutan in France and the Netherlands," affirms Jack.

"We already have mangosteen plantations and we'll start shipping them to the Canadian market and Europe in 2016. We currently sell rambutan in the Netherlands via Nature's Pride and they have informed us about the good potential for the crop in the European market," concludes Angeli.
