"Jeroen Buyck: "Absolute premier for Belgium"

Calsa expands and sends first pears to Canada

Calsa started use of its warehouse this summer. It is a good 3,400 m2 extension, with 1,200 m2 of fridge space and a large hall where everything can be conditioned and laid out. There are also 6 new loading docks. This doubles the amount from 6 to 12. This was said by Jeroen Buyck of Calsa.

Sustainable

He indicates that they also expanded considerably in parking. "We now have space for 15 trucks. The new building was made completely sustainably, in prefab concrete with insulation in between. There is also insulation under the floor, which controls the cooling costs. The advantage of such a concrete construction is that this holds the temperature inside better, so it remains cool in the summer. This combined with solar panels that we laid down a few years ago, means that we store our goods in quite a sustainable way."

Optimal logistic flow
He emphasises that the logistic flow in the company is now optimal due to this extension. "On one side all fresh fruits and vegetables come in, and at the back, the new warehouse, everything can be set up, controlled and loaded. This saves us time everyday, which is good for the freshness of our product, and our cost control."

Premier: first pears to Canada
Jeroen says that the trade is a bit quieter now. "We are, of course, looking for new markets due to the embargo in Russia. We have always done this, but now we have to try even harder. Yesterday, for the first time ever, we sent Belgian pears of the Conferences variety to customer in Canada by reefer container. This is an absolute first for Belgium. We believe in this market, it will take time to convince the customers and consumers there of the Conference pear. But we started small in other countries 20 years ago with pears or other products. So it will probably continue to develop."
