Production area for Juliet apples to increase

With the success of their organic apple, the Juliet, Les Amis de Juliet is increasing the area from which its growers harvest the fruit. The move is expected to yield more than 40 percent more fruit over the next two years.

Formed in 2005, Les Amis de Juliet works with a group of French growers to produce and market the organic apple variety. Aside from being organic, the apple is characterized by a crunchy texture and a mild, sweet taste. It's also resistant to scab and oidium, two diseases which affect tree fruit.

Currently, the apple is grown by a group of 100 growers spread out across the southern part of France. The growers use 290 hectares of land to produce the apple, but that will go up to 350 hectares next year. While the current situation had Juliet's growers produce 7,000 tons of fruit in 2014, the increased growing area is expected to bump up production to 10,000 tons by 2016.

In addition to being sold as fresh fruit, Juliet apples are also processed into organic juices, ciders, jams and applesauce. When sold as fresh fruit, the apples come in retail punnets containing four, six and eight apples, as well as in one-layer and two-layer trays. Cardell Export distributes the fruit throughout Europe, Asia and North America.
