Skyservices invests in the future of import & export perishables in Cape Town

On 3 & 4 November 2014 Skyservices will move into its new, purpose built, perishable facility in Tower road, Thunder City, Cape Town International Airport.

This step will conclude the intensive and cumulative effort, planning and execution on the part of Skyservices management, its sub-tenant customers & service providers and the combined project team.

This investment is clear and visible confirmation of Skyservices' commitment and faith in the future growth of perishable airfreight in the western Cape.

Designed and planned in conjunction with some of Skyservices leading and long standing customers the facility will set a new standard in perishable airfreight handling.

The facility includes:-
Five cold room chambers totalling 983m2 of cold storage space within a 1732 m2 warehouse; including forced air, cooling and freezing capability, also 864 m2 of modern office, board room and operation facilities situated on a 7200m2 property – enabling a further 50% expansion capability as and when required.

Features include:
  • An insulated sea freight container docking bay.
  • Ozone air purification technology present in all cold rooms.
  • Fully equipped PPECB product & packaging Inspection room.
  • 2 departure bays with roll on roll off airline ULD scissor lifts.
  • 2 receiving dock levelling bays for efficient and quick offloading.
  • 3 separate fumigation chambers.
  • Centralised 72 camera CCTV system – accessible to tenants.
  • A biometric access, time and attendance and security control system.
  • LED lighting technology throughout the facility.

Jaco Vlok, the Director Operations, Marketing & Sales: “This facility is the culmination of a goal we set ourselves some two and a half years ago and some serious planning and hard work on the part of the entire project team has taken place since.”

“With so many parties giving vital input, it has been a challenge to convert the ideal requirements of all involved, into what we see here before us today. I dare say we have achieved our objective and met the requirements we set ourselves.” Vlok has managed the project from the outset.

“Our efficiency has also been improved as we are able to operate from these facilities at a similar cost to the now ill-suited old rented facility we have occupied the last eight years.”

“I look forward to seeing the results achieved from the capability and potential that this new facility offers us and our customers & service provider partners,” Vlok added.

The official opening will take place in January 2015.
