"Fresh raspberry consumption is growing every year"

Consumption trends are changing in Europe, where values ​​such as health and welfare are becoming increasingly relevant; values which are associated with red fruits or berries, making them increasingly more important. In terms of popularity, raspberries have been gaining strength in recent years, becoming "fashionable," according to Francisco Sánchez, manager of Onubafruit.

"Until relatively recently, raspberries were consumed mostly in bakery products, but this trend has been changing in recent years. Fresh consumption has been growing gradually and demand is consequently increasing steadily," says Francisco. "As an example, we have Germany, where we have gone from 1,800 tonnes of raspberries exported in 2011 to 3,600 tonnes in 2013. This same upward trend has been registered in the UK, the main market for Spanish raspberries, as well as in the Netherlands," he explains. 

"We can say that the fruit is fashionable, and given the nutritional properties it has, it is necessary to convey those values ​​to the consumer, offering them a product which retains its flavour, aroma and colour for as long as possible, especially now that fresh consumption is starting to increase," he says.

Onubafruit makes about 15 million Euro in revenue per season and dominates the major European markets, remaining the continent's largest berry trader. Altogether, the company's berry exports in Europe amount to about 60,000 tonnes, including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries (besides citrus and persimmon) with a turnover exceeding 150 million Euro.

According to Francisco Sánchez, the most important export market for raspberries has always been the UK, and remains so. "In 2013, the sector exported more than 5,400 tonnes. Therefore, it was important for all our varieties to respond to the demands of that market, which they do. However, this does not put aside the demands or needs of other destinations."

Just this year, Onubafruit has launched four new exclusive varieties: Imara, Kweli, Lagorie and Vajolet, with a long shelf life that makes them ideal to reach more distant markets. "These new varieties are opening the possibility to reach any market with total quality assurance in terms of aroma, flavour and shelf life," he points out. 

Francisco affirms that these varieties cater to the general demands for calibre, sweetness and acidity, "with clearly superior features compared to those of any other varieties."

"What's really interesting to highlight is their production schedule. With Lagorie and Vayolet, we have production from January to June; with Imara, from September to February, and in the months of May, June and July; Kweli and from September to February and from April to June. In short, a comprehensive calendar that allows for year round supply to our clients.

Spain is not a major raspberry consumer, compared with strawberries, but according to Francisco, consumption is on the rise, even if slower than in Germany or the UK, as over the years knowledge about its health benefits has spread through promotions. Onubafruit's new varieties can play a crucial part in this process.




"Our country is not a major raspberry consumer, as each season it receives only 10% of the national production, although catering and baking businesses and households are gradually introducing and promoting the product. Our new varieties will certainly contribute to this slight increase with their exceptional taste that will appeal to the most demanding palates," he assures. 

"Also, its gradual lack of seasonality will facilitate its supply also in autumn and positively affect consumption. The product will be able to remain on the shelves for ten months, and prices will thus be more competitive and attractive to the end customer."

This year, Onubafruit expects to reach 10,000 tonnes of raspberries, compared to the 6,000 registered last season and it aims to continue growing.
