"Frank Ocampo: "Comparable season to last year expected"

Brazilian melon season starts at Hagé International

Yesterday the first Galia, Cantaloupe, Piel de Sapo, yellow melons and watermelons, seedless and seeded arrived at Hagé. Now that the Spanish supply is rapidly decreasing, especially for the larger sizes, it is the ideal moment to switch to the Brazilian import.

Frank Ocampo, buyer and salesman for Hagé, expects similar volumes to last year. "Despite the persistent drought there is enough supply and we expect a good availability throughout the Brazilian season. This makes the melons attractive for putting in programmes," according to Ocampo. "Both retail and wholesale clients are going more in depth with overseas melons. There is a lot of interest in the sub varieties within the Galia, Canteloupe, yellow melons and watermelons. The Yellow Honey Dew 'Goldex' and Galia 'Amergal' are in high demand at the moment."

Hagé has the right contacts with strong and reliable suppliers. They can grow the best sub-varieties and guarantee the quality of their product. "I am positive and very satisfied with the quality of the first deliveries. I'm counting on this being a good sign for the whole season. The good weather over the next week should mean we can sell these melons for a good price," concludes Ocampo.

Hagé International supplies melons all year round. The melon season from Brazil runs from the beginning of September until the beginning of February. Then Hagé International switches to Central American melons from Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama after which the Spanish melons take over again.
