Mexico is the largest exporter of avocados, lime, green pepper and guava
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) indicated that at the end of 2013 Mexico was world's largest exporter of avocado, green pepper, guava, tomato, limes, mango, papaya, cucumber and watermelon. Colima, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Sonora and Veracruz are the main producers.
According to SAGARPA, these products were sold in Germany, Argentina, Australia, Belize, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, South Korea, Cuba, Chile, Denmark, El Salvador, United States and the Netherlands, at an approximate value of $6,289 million dollars.
Mexico is the world's leading exporter of avocados. Production generates around $800 million dollars per year and 85% of the Mexican avocados are harvested in Michoacán. United States, Japan and Germany are the main destinations. Domestic production of avocados is equivalent to the volume produced by Chile, the Dominican Republic, Indonesia and Colombia; Mexico's strongest competitors.
Mexico produces a wide variety of peppers: jalapeño, serrano, poblano, chilaca and pepper. Chihuahua and Sinaloa produce one of every two tons of green peppers. The Mexican pepper's quality is a gateway to the international market. Mexican Green peppers ranks first in exports.
Aguascalientes and Michoacan contributed 3 out of every 4 tons of guava produced in the country. Guava sales amount to 1,300 million pesos, and represent 1.6% of all the fruit produced in Mexico. The main destination for Mexican guavas is the United States.
Tomato represents 20% of the national production of vegetables. Sinaloa produced 80% of the total national production. Mexico placed 50% of their production abroad to markets such as the United States, with 94% of export earnings from this crop.
Limes constitute 11.3% of the national fruit volume. Veracruz, Michoacan and Colima generate nearly seven out of ten tons of the Mexican production. The country produces 16% of the limes in the world and strengthens its presence in the international citrus market. Mexico exports its limes to the North American market and Europe (Netherlands and UK). The United States and the Netherlands are the main destinations with sales of 80% and 10%, respectively.
More than half of the national production of papayas comes from Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz. Five out of every one hundred papayas consumed in the world are Mexican. One fifth of the national production is exported abroad, the United States are the fruit's main destination and the country accounts for 99% of the fruits revenues.
Cucumber contributes 4.5% of the national production of vegetables. Two out of every five cucumbers harvested in the country are from Sinaloa. Eight out of ten tons produced are destined for the United States. Seven out of one thousand cucumbers consumed in the world are Mexican.
Sonora, Jalisco and Chihuahua account for almost half of the national watermelon production. One out of every one hundred watermelons consumed in the world is Mexican; 99.6% of the revenues from watermelon exports came from the United States. Just over half of the national production of watermelon is sold in the international market.
Sagarpa statistics indicate that countries like Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, Malaysia, Russia and Singapore represent a market opportunity for these products.
