Peru: Ica is the main producing region of tangelo

At first glance, a tangelo looks like an orange, but it's easy to differentiate them as it has a bulge at one of its sides. Tangelos taste like tangerine, which makes them more enjoyable for the little ones. They don't have much pulp but are very juicy, which is ideal for the production of juices. The tangelo has several features that give this citrus a great potential for growth.

In Peru, the main exporting region is Ica, accounting for 36% of national production. Lima follows with 16%, so both regions account for more than half of the country's tangelo production.

In recent years, the value of exports has grown steadily. By 2013, exports of tangelo amounted to $22.3 million dollars, i.e. a 40% increase when compared to 2010. So far in 2014, $16.7 million dollars of tangelos have been exported, more than what was exported in all of 2010. Expectations are that this year's total exports will widely surpass those of the 2013.

41% of the tangelo production is destined for exports. In the case of Ica, 90% of its production is destined for foreign markets. Netherlands and the United States are the main export destinations of Peruvian tangelo.
