"Daan Dees: "Import boycott potatoes Russia important consideration in decision"

Terrapoint stops sorting, but expands storage and handling

From next August 1 onwards, Terrapoint will stop sorting and packaging potatoes and onions. The company from Breskens is expanding the activities surrounding storage and handling of these and other products or goods. That's announced by Daan Dees in a letter to relations. "The heavy competition from at home and abroad means very low margins have to be settled for. In order to be able to generate profitability, it's necessary to continuously process large to very large volumes. The associated, and above all varying risks, are too great for Terrapoint, and not at all proportional to the margins," the director explains.

"An important consideration in our decision is that Russia, one of our key markets, has closed the borders to our potatoes for a long time. For other destinations, we are also experiencing a growing level of serious trade restrictions. This fits very well in the international, broadly supported policy of countries to strive for more independence of food import, and to protect the own production," Daan continues. "It's become harder and harder to discern ourselves in the market with a good quality product, compared to foreign suppliers. The quality desired by customers is often very minimally available in the Netherlands. The quality risk weighs very heavy upon us, often with big consequences."

"To be able to quickly effectuate our decisions for the adjustment of activities and get the spaces available for storage and handling, we opt for a swift sale of the now redundant machines and installations, through the specialized channels of Troostwijk, leading auctioneers in international sales of agricultural and industrial equipment. We kindly invite you to monitor the progress on www.troostwijkauctions.com/uk/ and we hope to be able to greet you on the viewing day, on Saturday, September 13", Daan continues. "To summarize, Terrapoint B.V. will stop sorting and packaging potatoes and onions. The other activities, mainly storage and handling, will be expanded. All machines and inventory that are now redundant, will be auctioned online by Troostwijk, for an international audience. We find it very important to keep to all running agreements in the most correct way possible, and will do everything we can to achieve that."
