Hope for mushroom market revival through reducing supply
Mushroom sales traditionally fall during the summer months. According to Diederick Knijnenburg from Oakfield Mushrooms in Stramproy the production of chestnut mushrooms has been reasonable in balance with the demand in the last few weeks. The same cannot be said for the white mushroom. "More than in other years, there is now a more conscious effort to reduce on different fronts. That is a good thing. Continuing to produce when demand falls does not make any sense."
Oakfield Mushrooms is a commercial trade company with fully owned production with direct sales to retail and food service, both domestically and abroad. The nursery supplies white mushrooms, chestnut mushrooms, portabello, flats, (kings) oysters, shiitake mushrooms, and more. Both organic and conventional varieties are available. "The whole package is a little less in the summer, with the exception of the white mushroom," says Diederick. "The revenue from mushrooms in the retail sector is much larger in the winter. Now other products are more popular."
There is also reduction going on in countries around us. I expect a turning point from this week onwards. This week the price of white mushrooms is already better, but there were times in the last month and a half that it was extremely difficult.
