"Marc van der Zandt: "Demand for dried mushrooms is also rising"

FME introduces new line 'Special Selection' for wild mushrooms

Fresh Mushroom Europe has introduced a new line of wild mushrooms under the name 'Special Selection'. "We are collaborating with specially selected suppliers for this top line. We started with Girolles from Lithuania and are extending this line with many other products of global origins, such as Cantharel Jaune and Cèpes," says commercial manager Marc van der Zandt.

In the past similar products would often be packaged in wood, but FME chose a carton box for this line. "We also looked at the food safety aspect. A box could have splinters and staples," explains Marc, who joined Fresh Mushroom Europe at the start of the year. "The moisture level also remains more stable."

Dried mushrooms
Another development that is on the rise are the dried mushrooms. As of recently the mushroom supplier has its own air dryer, as well as a freeze dryer, which gives them the option of drying all mushroom varieties themselves. "We control the entire chain. Dried mushrooms are still a relatively small market at the moment, but we believe it has a lot of potential," says Marc.

FME focuses both on the domestic market and export with the full assortment of mushrooms. "Western Europe is our main export market, but we also supply to the Middle East," concludes Marc.
