"Bart Hermans: "Fruit and veg packed in shrink wrap look nicer and stay fresher"

PSC Packaging sees opportunities for shrink wrap in fruit and veg sector

PSC Packaging distributes packaging machines. The firm mainly focuses on the packaging of products. PSC is working together with the client to find a solution to the packaging project. The company works in various markets, but for the last few years they have also been focusing on the fruit and vegetable sector. "Mainly through shrink wrap," says Bart Hermans. He says that the fruit and vegetable sector is a difficult market. "We have suppliers in Italy and they indicated that shrink wrap is quite popular in the food sector there. In Italy it is likely to be easier to implement the idea of shrink wrap than it is here in Benelux."

New, thinner wrapping
Bart is learning more and more about this new idea through exhibitors at different horticulture and packaging fairs. "We have already carried out several assignments in the fruit and vegetable sector, but a real breakthrough has not yet happened. We can offer a lot, but people already have a choice between various packaging. This is why we want to show that shrink wrap is the ideal solution. Fruits and vegetables are generally packed in flowpacks or stretch wrap machines, a big advantage is that our machines can more easily pack different products through one machine. Because there is better quality wrapping on the market there is almost no difference in the cost of thinner wrap. The advantages of shrink wrap are that it looks nicer and the product stays fresher. Our machines are set to package horizontally."

Many possibilities
"Some examples of things we could shrink wrap would be greenhouse vegetables like eggplants, paprika's, cucumbers, and zucchini. Banana, kiwi and cabbage could also use shrink wrap. There are many opportunities in the food market because food is a basic need. Therefore we are confident about the future."
