Jealous Fruits has unique offerings in July

In 2014 over 80% of Jealous Fruits overall tonnage will be harvested in August, with July varieties representing the balance. The company expects to start their main harvest season with Lapin in late July, and continue to the end of August with full, continual daily volumes of Lapin, Sweetheart, Staccato, Regina, Sovereign, Sentennial and Rainier varieties. By contrast, in 2014, Washington and Oregon shippers are projecting less than 5% of their total crop to be harvested in August, with most of that packed in the beginning of the month.

Although Jealous Fruits specializes in late season fruit the company also has unique offerings in July. Jealous Fruits 2014 cherry harvest is expected to begin July 12 -14 at the home farm with the Satin and Van varieties being harvested through July 22.

Satin is their most popular early season variety and is a large, heart shaped cherry with a thick green stem. The flesh is firm, and the cherry has a mild, sweet flavour.

Rainier: Photo taken July 3. Harvest expected August 1.

Van is a classic cherry that Jealous Fruits grow in limited volumes. Van is one of the parents or grandparents of most varieties produced at Jealous Fruits. The cherry is very broad shouldered with fat green stems and a crunchy texture. Estimated harvest date is July 17 -19.

Satin- Home Farm: Projected harvest July 14.

Fortunately, the intermittent rains last week had no impact on their crop, as the fruit was green enough, and escaped significant damage. The forecast for the next 10 days is for sunny skies in the range of 28 to 30C. There is no extreme heat forecasted for the region.
