Could Brazillian superfruit speed up brain damage recovery

A Brazilian super fruit is believed to be a key component to recovery from brain damage for Jeff Moats, who survived a near-fatal traffic accident. Moats used a powder derived from the camu camu to overcome his symptoms. Camu camu is very high in antioxidants and is the plant with the highest levels of naturally occurring vitamin C in the world.

Moats was involved in an accident while driving his scooter in 2011. The crash crushed his eye sockets and sinuses and left him with extensive damage to his brain. In his recovery period, Moats was prescribed a number of powerful pain medications along with anti-seizure drugs intended to help him cope with the significant amount of brain trauma that he had suffered in the accident. Due to his suspicions that the pain medications were masking his pain and not helping him heal properly, and because of the undesirable side effects that the medications were causing, Moats began taking camu camu powder.

Moats states that he had worked continually on sustainable agriculture in the Brazilian Amazon for 23 years, and during this time, he was introduced to camu camu by members of the indigenous tribes. As he learned more about the fruit over the years, Moats understood it to be consumed by indigenous Brazilians for a variety of health reasons. He discovered that when taking the natural product, much to the surprise of his doctors, his headaches and other symptoms began to disperse and disappeared completely within just two days. On his third day of taking the camu camu capsules, he awoke pain-free and has not suffered from headaches since. Moats stressed that it is not advisable to stop taking medication as prescribed by a medical professional, but in his situation, he felt it was all that he could do.

Camu camu is found only in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela and Colombia – usually in the most flooded parts of the Amazon rain forest. Its leaves and cherry-sized fruits are used in these parts of the world for medicinal purposes. The camu camu grows a dark red color when ripe and is packed full of vitamin C, containing more than 30 to 50 times that found in an orange. According to advocates for natural health, the Brazilian camu camu fruit has antiviral properties and can help a person heal from viruses such as cold sores, the common cold, herpes and shingles. It also holds a reputation as a health tool for eyes and gums due to the high levels of vitamin C that it contains, as well as a natural energy booster.

The camu camu fruit also contains an essential amino acid called valine. Valine cannot be produced by the human body, and must be obtained through food. This amino acid is crucial in the function of the nervous system and cognitive ability. Leucine is another essential amino acid that camu camu contains and is important for bone and muscle tissue growth as well as the production of growth hormones.

Moats continues to work closely with the indigenous tribes that harvest the camu camu fruit from along the banks of Brazilian rivers. He has since founded Amazon Origins, a company which imports camu camu and sells it in the form of Amacari capsules. He explains that this way he can help other people discover the benefits of camu camu and give back to the indigenous tribes that harvest it at the same time. To this day, Moats attributes his recovery from brain damage to the Brazilian superfruit.
