New seedless papaya variety Aurora

The German Fruit Importer Inter Weichert has recently expanded its range of fresh papayas with the introduction of the Aurora variety; the very first seedless papaya, originally from Hawaii and developed through selection, without gene manipulation, in Israel.

The variety’s developer highlights that “this strain was cultivated to be very tasty, with no after-taste or off-putting odour. As well as achieving its special health properties, we also developed a fruit which is highly efficient and very easy to prepare, with its smooth skin and thick wall cavity, with no seeds. Greenish flesh is easy and fast to cook, and the shelf life is very long.”

Enrique Nebot, buyer at Weichert, affirms that “the variety is very interesting compared to existing ones, as the fruit is 100 % seedless, though more expensive. It is characterised by a very unique, sweet and uniform flavour.”

“Seeded papayas are a very healthy fruit with a high amount of antioxidants, mostly while still green; the reason being that the concentration of Papain and various other enzymes at that stage is very high in the seeds.” Though Aurora papayas are seedless, they are just as healthy at their fully ripe stage, “as the absence of seeds means that all the Papain & various enzymes concentrate inside the flesh.”

Inter Weichert plans to target the fruit’s sales in markets such as Austria, Scandinavia and, of course, Germany, where the firm is its exclusive distributor. The fact that no gene manipulation was involved in its development is consequently one of its greatest advantages.
